SITE DESCRIPTION
Treated Volume |
2,500 m³ |
Thermal technology | Combiened In-Situ & Ex-Situ thermal treatment |
Main contaminant |
Mercury (Hg) and Mercuric Chloride (HgCl₂)
|
| Site challenges |
Complex urban remediation beneath and around an existing building, requiring both in-situ and ex-situ treatment while maintaining strict environmental and safety controls.
|
Project Timeline | 1 year |
SOLUTION
Treatment Method | Combined In-Situ and Ex-Situ thermal treatment |
Treatment program | Three in-situ treatment zones and one ex-situ thermal pile using a total of 322 heating tubes to remediate highly mercury-contaminated soils. |
Contaminated Vapors Management |
Mercury vapors extracted and treated through a dedicated Vapor Treatment Unit combining condensation and activated carbon adsorption, allowing mercury recovery before atmospheric discharge.
|
Process control | Continuous monitoring of soil temperature, soil pressure, surrounding structures, mercury concentrations, gas emissions, groundwater and thermocouples throughout the remediation campaign. |

RESULTS
✅ 4,500 tonnes of mercury-contaminated soil successfully remediated. |
✅ Combined ISTT & ESTT strategy enabled the treatment of a complex urban site without impacting surrounding infrastructure. |
✅ Approximately 150 kg of elemental mercury recovered through the vapor treatment system & Strict environmental and atmospheric emission compliance maintained throughout the project. |
