Arkil ready for major contamination after PFAS success

With a successful demonstration project, Arkil has now proven that it is possible to remove PFAS contamination from soil. The CEO is now calling for larger-scale projects.

A milestone was reached in the blue container in the pictures here when Arkil carried out one of two demonstration projects for Danish Regions last year.

The goal was to destroy PFAS in 30 cubic meters of soil at the national PFAS testing center in Korsør.

It is now official that the project was a success. The technology is scalable, and there will be significant synergies to be gained from using the same technology on larger-scale PFAS cleanups.

"With the pilot project in Korsør, we have proven that we have the technology to solve one of the major environmental problems of our time. Now we are ready to enter into dialogue with municipalities, regions, companies and the next government about applying the technology to large-scale projects," says Michael Hansen, CEO of Arkil A/S.

When Arkil cleans up PFAS-contaminated soil, it goes – somewhat simplified – like this:

The soil is filled into an insulated container, in this case a container. Large gas burners are lit to heat the soil. When the soil temperature reaches over 350 degrees, the PFAS begins to turn into gas. This gas is collected and sent through the same burners that are already heating the soil in the container. In the flames, which have a temperature of 1,400 degrees, the PFAS is destroyed.
