Ex-Situ Thermal Desorption of PAH-Contaminated Soil at a Former Railway Site in Livarot, France

A 620 m³ volume of excavated PAH-contaminated soil was treated in an on-site heated pile using 15 heating tubes and 5 heat-recovery return tubes, reaching 200°C during a five-week treatment campaign in a residential setting.

SITE DESCRIPTION

Ex-situ thermal desorption pile treating PAH-contaminated soil in Livarot

SOLUTION

          Treatment Method

Excavated soil treated in an on-site ESTD pile, placed in successive layers with heating and return tubes

          Treatment program

15 heating tubes with individual burners, 5 return tubes, target temperature 200°C, 37 days of heating

         Contaminated Vapors Management

Contaminants extracted by forced gas circulation; extracted vapours combusted through the heating system

       Process control

32 thermocouples, continuous gas analysis (CO, CxHy, CO₂, O₂, NOx) and remotely accessible monitoring data
