In-Situ Thermal Desorption for Soil Remediation at Saint Joseph Institute, Brussels

Haemers remediated hydrocarbon-contaminated soil within the courtyard of the Saint Joseph Institute using In-Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD). The compact treatment system was deployed in a confined urban environment, achieving remediation targets while maintaining full compliance with atmospheric emission standards.

SITE DESCRIPTION

       Treated Volume

  65 m³ of contaminated soil

          Thermal technology

In-Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD)

       Main contaminant

Hydrocarbons

        Site challenges

Contaminated area located in an enclosed school courtyard surrounded by buildings and adjacent to a high-voltage electrical cabin

        Project Timeline

  10 weeks

SOLUTION

          Treatment Method

In-Situ Thermal Desorption

          Treatment program

Treatment of 65 m³ (118.8 tonnes) using 5 heating tubes with a target temperature of 200°C

         Contaminated Vapors                          Management

Off-gases extracted and discharged above the surrounding buildings. Emissions continuously monitored

       Process control

Continuous temperature and emissions monitoring throughout the treatment to achieve the remediation target while ensuring safe operation in a confined urban environment

RESULTS

✅         Hydrocarbon concentrations reduced below the remediation                target of 300 mg/kg

✅          Successful remediation completed within a constrained                         urban school environment

✅           Atmospheric emissions remained compliant throughout the                entire treatment process
