In-Situ Thermal Desorption of Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Soil Beneath a Former Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark

A 235 m³ contaminated zone resulting from leaks in five underground oil tanks was treated using 37 diesel-fired burners with reburn technology, reaching 250°C at cold points and achieving the 100 mg/kg C10–C40 treatment target after 43 days despite strict urban noise and odour constraints.

SITE DESCRIPTION

       Treated Volume

   235 m³ of contaminated soil (400 T)

          Thermal technology

    In-Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD)

       Main contaminant

Hydrocarbons (C10–C40), up to 22,000 mg/kg DM

        Site challenges

Contamination from 5 underground oil tanks beneath a former hospital; dense urban location with strict noise and odour constraints

        Project Timeline

2020–2021

SOLUTION

          Treatment Method

In-situ thermal treatment using diesel burners with reburn technology

          Treatment program

37 heating tubes / diesel burners, target temperature 250°C at cold points

         Contaminated Vapors Management

Reburn technology integrated into the diesel burner system

       Process control

Soil temperature monitored every metre: 4 monitoring points from 0–3 m and 2 points from 0–5 m

RESULTS

✅           235 m³ (400 T) of C10–C40 contaminated soil treated.

✅           43-day treatment campaign with a target temperature of 250°C at the coldest points.

✅            Treatment successfully validated after 43 days, with the C10–C40 treatment target of 100 mg/kg achieved.
