In-Situ Thermal Desorption of TPH-Contaminated Soil Beneath Existing Infrastructure at the Eiffage Site in Louviers, France

ISTD was selected to remediate a 120 m², 4.5 m-deep zone contaminated with TPH C10–C40 while preserving an existing cement rainwater pipe, eliminating a 65 cm-thick floating oil layer after 55 days of heating.

SITE DESCRIPTION

       Treated Volume

120 m² of contaminated soil, treated to a depth of 4.5 m (~540 m³)

          Thermal technology

   In-Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD)

       Main contaminant

TPH C10–C40 (up to 40,000 mg/kg dm), LNAPL present

        Site challenges

Treatment beneath/around a cement rainwater pipe; groundwater at 4–4.5 m depth; 65 cm thick LNAPL layer

        Project Timeline

2012

SOLUTION

          Treatment Method

In-Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD), selected to preserve the cement rainwater pipe

          Treatment program

169 heating tubes, target temperature 100°C, 55 days of heating

         Contaminated Vapors Management

Gas composition monitored for CO, CxHy, CO₂, O₂ and NOx

       Process control

Temperature monitoring with 16 thermocouples; treatment duration: 8 weeks

RESULTS

✅           120 m² of contaminated soil treated to a depth of 4.5 m.

✅           After 55 days of heating, the free-phase LNAPL (floating oil layer) was eliminated.

✅           Treatment completed over an 8-week period, with continuous temperature and gas monitoring
