In-Situ Thermal Remediation of Hydrocarbon Contamination at a Former Petrol Station, Italy

More than 1,000 m³ of soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons were successfully remediated using In-Situ Thermal Desorption, achieving contaminant concentrations below 50 mg/kg and meeting the remediation objectives despite challenging groundwater conditions.

SITE DESCRIPTION

1,024 m³ of contaminated soil

          Thermal technology

   In-Situ Treatment

       Main contaminant

Hydrocarbons

        Site challenges

Managing groundwater levels that limited temperature increase

        Project Timeline

2017

SOLUTION

          Treatment Method

In-Situ treatment with continius heating over 90 days

          Treatment program

Installation of 19 gas fuled burners

         Contaminated Vapors Management

Reburn

       Process control

Continuous temperature monitoring into the soil throughout the treatment

RESULTS

✅         Successfully treated 1,946 tonnes of contaminated soil .

✅          Achieved contaminant concentrations below 50 mg/kg

✅          Remediation objectives achieved despite groundwater                           related temperature constraints
