In-Situ Thermal Remediation of Hydrocarbon Contamination Beneath a Residential Property, Denmark

More than 1,000 m³ of soils contaminated with mineral oil hydrocarbons were successfully remediated using In-Situ Thermal Desorption, reducing the contaminant mass from approximately 5,000 kg to 8 kg and achieving remediation targets for residential reuse.

SITE DESCRIPTION

       Treated Volume

1,022 m³ of contaminated soil

          Thermal technology

   In-Situ Treatment

       Main contaminant

Hydrocarbons, BTEX

        Site challenges

13 m below ground level, groundwater located close to the heating tubes, generating heat losses

        Project Timeline

2017

SOLUTION

          Treatment Method

In-Situ treatment  using 13 heating tubes

          Treatment program

Target temperature 220°C during 57 days

         Contaminated Vapors Management

Reburn

       Process control

Continuous temperature monitoring into the soil throughout the treatment

RESULTS

✅          Reduced contaminant mass from 5,000 kg to 8 kg

✅          Achieved remediation target of <100 mg/kg DM

✅           Average soil temperature reached 255°C after 57 days
