Large-Scale ISTD Validation Project at Haemers Technologies Headquarters

Haemers Technologies carried out a full-scale In-Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD) project at its Brussels headquarters to remediate historical motor oil contamination. The project demonstrated the effectiveness of the technology in treating both contaminated soil and groundwater while preventing further migration into the aquifer.

SITE DESCRIPTION

       Treated Volume

420 m³

          Thermal technology

In-Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD)

       Main contaminant

  C10–C40

        Site challenges

Historical motor oil contamination beneath an existing building; simultaneous remediation of soil and groundwater; evaluation of different fuel sources and heating configurations

        Project Timeline

March 2020 – March 2021

SOLUTION

          Treatment Method

In-Situ Thermal Desorption

          Treatment program

Treatment of 420 m³ over two batches using 90 heating tubes (propane, natural gas and diesel burners), target temperature of 250°C

         Contaminated Vapors                          Management

Vapors captured and treated using the Reburn system, with continuous emission monitoring using gas analyzers

       Process control

21 temperature monitoring wells, 8 pressure wells and continuous emission measurements ensured optimal heating performance and compliance throughout the treatment

RESULTS

✅         Soil and groundwater remediation targets successfully                           achieved (TPH <300 mg/kg in soil and <300 µg/L in                               groundwater)

✅          Cross-contamination from soil to groundwater successfully                 eliminated

✅           Demonstrated the efficiency of ISTD using multiple fuel                        sources and Smart Burners® technology
