Large-Scale LNAPL Recovery at the Feyzin Petrochemical Site, France

Haemers implemented a long-term LNAPL recovery system to remediate historical hydrocarbon contamination at a petrochemical facility in Feyzin. The installation was specifically designed to accommodate significant groundwater fluctuations, resulting in the recovery of more than 93 m³ of free-phase hydrocarbons.

SITE DESCRIPTION

       Treated Volume

>93 m³ of recovered hydrocarbons

          Thermal technology

LNAPL Skimming (Non-Thermal Technology)

       Main contaminant

Hydrocarbons, BTEX, aromatic and aliphatic compounds

        Site challenges

groundwater fluctuations up to 2.5 m induced by a nearby river; deep aquifer (12 m bgl)

        Project Timeline

Approximately 4 years

SOLUTION

          Treatment Method

Long-term LNAPL recovery using ATEX pumping units and adaptive skimming technology

          Treatment program

Installation of two DS 500-6D ATEX pumping units connected to 5,000 L storage tanks and eight SKIM 4-250 skimmers

         Contaminated Vapors                          Management

Not applicable

       Process control

Automated operation controlled by groundwater levels, allowing skimmers to continuously follow aquifer fluctuations of up to 2.5 m

RESULTS

✅          More than 93 m³ of pure hydrocarbons recovered

✅           Continuous operation despite groundwater fluctuations of                    up to 2.5 m

✅           Long-term containment and recovery of historical                                    petrochemical contamination
