Large-Scale Thermal Eradication of Japanese Knotweed

Large-scale In-Situ Thermal Treatment (ISTT) project in Kerkrade, Netherlands, carried out ahead of major infrastructure works. The treatment successfully eradicated Japanese knotweed over 463 m² through five treatment batches, providing a sustainable, herbicide-free solution before the construction of a new roundabout.

In-Situ Thermal Treatment (ISTT)

       Main contaminant

Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica)

        Site challenges

Eradication of invasive rhizomes prior to bridge demolition and roundabout construction, while working during winter conditions, around utility networks and on sloped terrain.

     Heating configuration

Five treatment batches covering a total of 463 m², using 242 Hot Screws™ to ensure complete thermal coverage of the infested areas.

      Treatment Duration

87 days (2025)

RESULTS

✅         463 m² of Japanese knotweed successfully treated                        across five thermal batches.

✅         Treatment completed within the required schedule before              the start of civil engineering works.

✅          Successful thermal eradication despite winter                                  conditions, utility constraints and sloping terrain.
