SITE DESCRIPTION
Treated Volume |
275 m³ |
Thermal technology | Ex-Situ Thermal treatment |
Main contaminant | Mercury (HG), VOCs and SVOCs |
| Site challenges | Former chemical industrial site heavily contaminated with mercury and chlorinated compounds, requiring treatment to residential standards for future redevelopment. |
Project Timeline | Jan 2022 - April 2022 |
SOLUTION
Treatment Method |
Ex-Situ Thermal Treatment (ESTT) |
Treatment program |
Pilot treatment of a 275 m³ soil pile using 15 propane Smart Burners, conductive heating and an integrated vapor treatment system.
|
Contaminated Vapors Management | Mercury and VOC vapors extracted and treated through a Vapor Treatment Unit (VTU), activated carbon filtration and condensate recovery prior to atmospheric discharge. |
Process control |
Continuous monitoring of temperature, pile pressure, combustion gases, mercury concentrations and vapor treatment performance throughout the project.
|

RESULTS
✅ 440 tonnes of mercury- and VOC-contaminated soil successfully treated. |
✅ Residential cleanup targets achieved for mercury and organic contaminants. |
✅ Complete recovery of mercury and chlorinated vapors through the vapor treatment system |
