Pilot-Scale In-Situ Thermal Treatment of Multi-Contaminant Soil, Machelen, Belgium

A 22-well pilot treated soil contaminated with a mixture of mineral oil, BTEX, chlorinated solvents, phenol and PAH for OVAM, targeting removal of free-phase LNAPL through combined thermal and vapour extraction technologies.

SITE DESCRIPTION

       Treated Volume

400 m³ of contaminated soil (720 T, pilot)

          Thermal technology

   In-Situ Treatment (ISTD, pilot) & SVE/CatOx

       Main contaminant

Mineral oil, BTEX, chlorinated solvents, phenol, PAH (LNAPL present)

        Site challenges

Cocktail of chemical contaminants over a 100 m² area, groundwater at 2.5 m depth; free-phase LNAPL between 13 and 150 cm

        Project Timeline

2013

SOLUTION

          Treatment Method

In-situ thermal treatment with hexagonal heating grid (2.2 m spacing), sub-contracted to main contractor ENVISAN

          Treatment program

22 heating wells, 11 burners, 9 vapour extraction wells, target temperature 100°C

         Contaminated Vapors Management

SVE and catalytic oxidation (CatOx), executed by ENVISAN

       Process control

3-week treatment period · soil temperatures monitored at 2.5 m depth

RESULTS

✅         400 m³ of contaminated soil treated (pilot scale).

✅          Coldest-point soil temperatures reached approximately 50°C after 3 weeks, targeting removal of free-phase LNAPL

✅         Pilot delivered for OVAM, sub-contracted through main contractor ENVISAN
