Residential Hydrocarbon Soil Remediation by ISTT

In situ thermal remediation project carried out at an occupied residential property in Quaregnon, Belgium. A leaking domestic fuel oil tank contaminated the soil beneath the cellar and in the adjacent garden, requiring treatment to depths of up to 6 metres while the house remained inhabited.

SITE DESCRIPTION

       Treated Volume

40 m³ of contaminated soil

          Thermal technology

   In-Situ Treatment

       Main contaminant

   Hydrocarbons

        Site challenges

The contaminated area was divided between the cellar beneath an occupied house and the adjacent garden, requiring treatment in a highly constrained residential environment.

SOLUTION

          Treatment Method

In situ thermal desorption using gas-fired Smart Burners installed directly within the contaminated zones.

          Treatment program

A total of six natural-gas-powered Smart Burners with integrated Re-Burn technology were installed

         Contaminated Vapors Management

Re-Burn system before discharge

       Process control

Continuous monitoring of soil temperatures, internal pressure, combustion gases and stack emissions to ensure treatment efficiency and environmental compliance.

RESULTS

✅          40 m³, corresponding to 64 tonnes, of hydrocarbon-                                contaminated soil were treated.

✅          Successful treatment was confirmed down to a depth of 6                     metres.

✅          Approximately 30.4 m³ of contaminated liquids and                               condensates were recovered during treatment.
