Thermal Eradication of Japanese Knotweed

Pilot project in Heerlen, Netherlands, demonstrating the effectiveness of In-Situ Thermal Treatment (ISTT) for the eradication of Japanese knotweed. The solution provided a sustainable, chemical-free alternative capable of destroying underground rhizomes while preventing long-term regrowth.

SITE DESCRIPTION

       Treated area

24 m²

          Thermal technology

In-Situ Thermal Treatment (ISTT)

       Main contaminant

Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica)

        Site challenges

Roadside infestation requiring complete destruction of underground rhizomes while avoiding excavation and herbicide application.

     Heating configuration

16 heating tubes with secondary heating tubes to optimize heat distribution and reduce energy consumption, or 50°C for 3 days

      Treatment Duration

May – July 2022

RESULTS

✅         Complete destruction of Japanese knotweed rhizomes.

✅         No regrowth observed during post-treatment site                              monitoring.

✅          Laboratory regrowth testing confirmed the absence of                   viable rhizomes after thermal treatment.
