Thermal Remediation of DNAPL and LNAPL Contamination in Alleröd, Denmark

Approximately 288 m³ of soils impacted by chlorinated solvents were successfully remediated using In-Situ Thermal Desorption, achieving cleanup objectives for PCE/TCE contamination beneath a high-voltage transformer installation.

SITE DESCRIPTION

       Treated Volume

340 m³ of contaminated soil

          Thermal technology

   In-Situ Treatment

       Main contaminant

PCE/TCE, DNAPL, LNAPL

        Site challenges

Treatment performed directly beneath a high-voltage transformer

        Project Timeline

2016

SOLUTION

          Treatment Method

In-Situ treatment of a 36 m² area, Installation of 15 heating tubes and 24 steam tubes connected to an EVS system

          Treatment program

Target temperature 88°C for 42 days

         Contaminated Vapors                          Management

Non-condensable gases were thermally destroyed to meet discharge standards, while condensable vapors were collected in a tank and transferred to the GEO facility for treatment.

       Process control

Continuous temperature monitoring into the soil throughout the treatment

RESULTS

✅         No VOCV residues detected in the soil after treatment

✅         Successfully treated 288 m³ (524 tonnes) of contaminated                    soil

✅        Cleanup objectives for chlorinated solvents achieved
