Urban Soil Remediation by In-Situ Thermal Desorption

Large-scale thermal treatment of TCE-impacted soil in an urban environment, combining precise temperature control, vapor extraction and continuous monitoring to restore the site for residential redevelopment.

SITE DESCRIPTION

       Treated Volume

  3,648 m³ of contaminated soil

          Thermal technology

In-Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD)

       Main contaminant

Trichloroethylene (TCE)

        Site challenges

Urban brownfield requiring remediation to an extremely low cleanup target (<1 mg/kg)

        Project Timeline

  Jan - May 2025

SOLUTION

          Treatment Method

In-Situ Thermal Desorption

          Treatment program

135 heating tubes, 135 Smart Burners, 11 MPE wells, VTU/CTU vapor treatment with continuous temperature monitoring.

         Contaminated Vapors                          Management

Extraction through MPE wells with treatment by VTU/CTU before atmospheric discharge.

       Process control

Continuous monitoring using thermocouples to control subsurface temperatures during heating.

RESULTS

✅         99% of TCE removed from contaminated soil.

✅          3,648 m³ (6,564 tonnes) treated using ISTD technology.

✅           Most of the treatment area achieved significant contaminant                reduction; the remaining hotspot was scheduled for                                excavation to meet the client's stringent cleanup target (<1                  mg/kg).
